European Fan Palm - Chamaerops humilis

Ribbon Palm - Livistona decipiens - Ribbon Fan Palm

The Ribbon Palm (Livistona decipiens, Ribbon Fan Palm) native to the east coast of Queensland, Australia, is another cold hardy palm tree that can reach heights of 30-50', prefers moderate watering but can withstand some drought after it's well established. This palm will adapt to most types of soil except for wet, soggy areas. It does well in a variety of lighting from partly shade to highly sunny.

Although it is slightly less cold hardy than the Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis), doing well in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 it can withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees f and can be a great alternative to other cold hardy palm choices due to it's insect and disease resistance.

The Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) is one of the more cold hardy palm trees thriving in USDA hardiness zones 9-11 and being known to withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees f. for short periods. Some people do consider the Queen Palm to be slightly messy with large seed pods forming and dropping around it.

The Queen Palm can reach heights of 40-50' when full grown and is considered a medium-fast grower after the first year. The Queen Palm provides a tropical palm appearance with its long green flowing fronds which make a nice rustling sound when the breeze blows creating a tropical oasis right in your backyard!
