The Washingtonia Palm (Washingtonia robusta, Mexican Fan Palm) is native to Mexico and the desert regions of Southwestern United States. The Washingtonia palm comes in two varieties, the robusta and the filifera. The Robusta is much more common and does better in the high humidity areas like the southeastern United States. The two varieties hybridize making what is commonly known as the filabusta.
The Washingtonia Palm is a cold Hardy Palm and is drought tolerant. The Washington Palm is salt tolerant too.
The growth rate is medium to fast and the Washingtonia Palm can get very tall. Lightning ends up determining the height in Florida for the palm as they will tower over all other palms and most trees in the landscape.
