European Fan Palm - Chamaerops humilis
Thinking of a great Christmas gift for that special someone? How about putting a touch of the tropics into this holiday season by ordering them a cold hardy European Fan Palm. Palm lovers everywhere can enjoy this palm, outdoors in USDA hardiness zones 7b - 11 or indoors in a container outside of the ideal zones.
The European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis) has a few names including: Mediterranean Fan Palm, Dwarf Fan Palm, and Palmito. It's native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and is known and sought after due to it's extreme cold hardiness thriving even in temperatures as low as 5 degrees f. This is also a wind resistant and salt tolerant palm tree.
The European Fan Palm does well grown in a container indoors because it is an extremely slow grower reaching heights of only 10' when full grown and taking years to reach. The beautiful, lush, clumping palm has elegant silvery blue fronds and can attain widths of 5'. This palm tree requires moderate watering but does best in well drained soil and can take full sun to partial shade but is at it's best in full sun.
Maintenance on the lovely European Fan Palm is easy, simply apply a goodpalm fertilizer twice a year for optimal health.

Ribbon Palm - Livistona decipiens - Ribbon Fan Palm
The Ribbon Palm (Livistona decipiens, Ribbon Fan Palm) native to the east coast of Queensland, Australia, is another cold hardy palm tree that can reach heights of 30-50', prefers moderate watering but can withstand some drought after it's well established. This palm will adapt to most types of soil except for wet, soggy areas. It does well in a variety of lighting from partly shade to highly sunny.
Although it is slightly less cold hardy than the Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis), doing well in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 it can withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees f and can be a great alternative to other cold hardy palm choices due to it's insect and disease resistance.
The Ribbon Palm can also be enjoyed by people in colder areas because it does well and is easy to grow in a container indoors.
Homeowners can have small/medium and Large Livistona Palms shipped to their door just in time for the holidays by clicking here.
